I am a weaver of baskets and dreams, and you can be too! What goes into the creation of basket is the energy and joy that people experience when they create “something from nothing”, and, ''Yes you can make a basket!''
My classes are for both men and women and usually are an all-day affair. We break for lunch. The classes are small so that I can help each student create their very own masterpiece. My joy comes from teaching others to do what I have been doing for many years. The classes are fun because what is the point if you aren’t having a good time?
I offer classes from my studio and also create classes venues at other locations. If you have an idea about putting together a class, I am all for discussing.
My husband, Marv Nielsen, is also an artist and carves whimsical, but very useful, hiking sticks. We are often seen together at juried art shows in Wisconsin. I have participated in numerous Wisconsin shows such as, Spring Green and Green Lake Art shows, Town Line Art Show in Sister Bay. Six years ago I was voted, “Artist of the Month” at the Mosquito Hill Nature Center in New London, WI.
While basket weaving is one of the widest spread crafts in the history of any human civilization, it is hard to say just how old the craft is because natural materials like wood and grass decay, so without proper preservation, much of the history of basket making has been lost and is simply speculated upon. The oldest known baskets have been dated to between 10,000 and 12,000 years old.
