The school year has started and Waushara’s Vision Backpack Nutrition Program is once again providing weekend snacks and meals to area students. The program has been selected as the beneficiary of the StoneRidge Round-Up program for the month of October. During the month of October, StoneRidge Piggly Wiggly shoppers will be invited to round up their purchases to support the Backpack Nutrition Program. StoneRidge Piggly Wiggly is located at 975 E Main St, Wautoma, WI 54982. The Backpack Nutrition Program offers a safety net for economically disadvantaged elementary students in Waushara County. The program provides nutritious meals for students to eat during weekends and school breaks when they don’t have access to the school breakfast and lunch programs. Students qualify for the program if they are eligible for the Federal free/reduced lunch program and register for the program if offered in their school. Non-perishable food items and coupons for fresh food travel home in student’s backpacks each week. The program began in 2012, serving twenty six students in one elementary school. Last year the program provided meals to 229 students and served four elementary schools. Free and reduced lunch rates of schools ranged from 54-69% of students. Waushara’s Vision Backpack Nutrition Program is a function of the Waushara Prevention Council, Inc. All gifts are tax deductible and used to provide food to students in need.
